Eric Demetriou wins Linden Art Prize

The winner for the inaugural Linden Art Prize has been announced. Eric Demetriou won first place for his work Knuckle Song (feed a piano through a woodchipper), 2013. Eric Demetriou completed a Masters of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2013. This installation is from a body of work created for his Masters project Noise and Mischief.

The sculpture consists of a turntable, 12-inch vinyl record, speakers and a wood chipped piano. Spectators are enticed towards the installation because of its attractive and decorative appearance. The piece consists of familiar objects that have been transformed and placed together to create something original and reminiscent of its former state. The functionality and design of the installation was an important factor as it subtly hints the intentions behind the hand of the artist. Demetriou describes his installation “The application of noise is partnered with a mischievous demeanour to incite a thrill-seeking experience that flirts with trouble and danger through outcomes of kinetic sound-based sculpture.”

The non-acquisitive contemporary art award sees that the winner will receive $10,000 cash, a rent-free studio at Linden for twelve months, an exhibition in the 2015 Linden Innovators Program and tailored mentoring for twelve months. The second prize ‘Linden Board of Management Encouragement Award’ went to Emma Hamilton for her piece Salt Level, 2013 and the third prize ‘MARS Award’ was selected for Debbie Symons.

The Linden Art Prize celebrates the talent from visual artists who have studied a Masters degree or PhD in 2013 from a Victorian University. The prize supports contemporary artists who have created work across a variety of mediums. Linden Director Melinda Martin is “thrilled to be providing this significant support to contemporary Melbourne artists, to enable them to grow their practice and benefit from the experience and insights of generous mentors from the vibrant Melbourne arts industry.”
