Andjana Pachkova: Die Sehnsucht

The German term ‘Die Sehnsucht’ roughly translates to ‘intensely longing’, denoting a deep emotional state for which there is no English equivalent. Compounded from ‘das sehnen’ (yearning) and ‘das seichtum’ (lingering illness), it represents feelings about facets of life that are unfinished or imperfect, paired with a desire for ideal alternatives. Andjana Pachkova explores this experience in her painterly abstracts, which weigh tone against form and mark, to visualise the balance between searching for happiness and the reality of unattainable wishes.
