Anthony Bartok’s style, in subject and aesthetic, mirrors the graphics of colouring books through a cynical lens that dwells on the monotony of modern life. Inspired by a trip to New York, these works reflect the irony of the magnetic city that is home to a spoilt and bored culture. Bartok’s paintings offer a poignant meditation on the blandness of capitalist society by bleeding acrylics across the surface of his illustrations, creating a ‘messy’ composition that emulates the apathetic and careless hand of a child’s painting.
