In the Arms of Unconsciousness: Women, Feminism and the Surreal

This exhibition presents newly commissioned and recent works – paintings, ceramics, photography, sculpture, video, drawings, and collage – by twenty-two leading female Australian artists, including Del Kathryn Barton, Louisa Chircop, Jill Orr, Patricia Piccinini, Julie Rrap, Deborah Kelly, Caroline Rothwell, and Juz Kitson, whose practices consider ideas of feminism and the surreal, suggesting linkages between the two, particularly in contemporary Australian art practice. These artists explore, disrupt, or challenge traditional representations of the female body and provide unique perspectives on personal and political issues which resonate today.
