BEAMS arts festival: Chippendale

Head down to Balfour Street, Chippendale on September 22nd for the BEAMS Festival, a creative spectacular hosted by the Chippendale Creative Precinct (CCP),  for one night only.

Chippendale will make its mark on Sydney, displaying its remarkable creative output and intriguingly shady history, with animation, comedic performances, live music, art and dance. The festival features an extraordinary array of contemporary art, with over 350 Chippendale natives working across light, video, performance, dance, site-specific sculptural installation and live music mediums. The festival is designed to highlight Chippendale’s “rich and sordid past,” and the phenomenal creative community it has produced, as well as its future as Australia’s first sustainable suburb.

Festival Director Nicky Ginsberg says; “Our objective is to model ourselves as the next Chelsea of New York. BEAMS is the first celebration of this.” Never fear, there will be food; with local chefs, eateries, food and wine providores coming to the show. Local Universities are also making a contribution, with the University of Sydney, Notre Dame and the University of Technology all displaying Chippendale’s emerging talent- the UTS Faculty of Design’s stunning laneway light installations are sure to be a highlight. In addition, 50 Guerilla knitters are making a mark on street architecture and trees with their vibrant creations, led by 2006 Head On Photographic Winner Patricia Casey.

Plus Artist Profile and Art Almanac editor, Owen Craven, will lead a tour of precinct galleries and Q&A discussions with the exhibiting artists from 5pm.

The festival is free for all, one night only.
