Beijing Realism

In Beijing Realism, Chinese and Chinese-Australian artists Han Bing, Hu Xiangqian, Li Xiaofei, and Tami Xiang explore connections between history and the everyday through photography, video, and installation.

The exhibition muses on a Chinese poem about tree branches that wanted to pierce the sky but only managed to poke a few small holes. The artists’ works, depicting peasants, students, and migrant workers, are these branches, poking holes in history and exposing its effects felt today – from the Cultural Revolution, the one-child policy, and economic reforms to the present.
