As part of the Australian War Memorial’s program for commissioning war artists, Quilty was attached to the Australian Defense Force in late 2011 to observe the Australians’ activities in Kabul, Kandahar and Tarin Kot as part of Operation Slipper.
Presented in association with the Australian War Memorial, the exhibition presents 21 studio paintings based on his observations and experience while on tour. The paintings, largely portraits of service men and women, capture the emotional and psychological impact the war has on those at the frontline. The exhibition tells the story of war’s “aftermath” from his perspective and through the close relationship he formed with the subjects.
