The winner of the 2014 Chippendale New World Art Prize will be announced on Thursday May 8 at NG Art Gallery.
In recent years, Chippendale’s artistic community has grown significantly. People regularly gather in this creative area to witness the current art trends and movements that are filling gallery spaces. Chippendale has quickly become an attractive artistic suburb that continues to provide spectators with a fresh variety of art within a series of popular galleries.
The Chippendale New World Art Prize has given artists with a range of artistic mediums the opportunity to apply. Each year, artists are required to submit work that represents a chosen theme, this year the fitting theme “Utopia” was selected. This prize represents the idea of a new contemporary art world, one that presents work that generates a wide variety of interpretations and feelings. Chippendale is the new utopian place for art.
The Chippendale New World Art Prize exhibition of finalists will be officially opened by philanthropist and Chairman of Frasers Property Australia Dr Stanley Quek. The night will commence at 6pm at NG Art Gallery where people are invited to enjoy a drink and canapés as they wait to hear the announcement of the winner. Speeches will be presented by Chippendale New World Art Prize benefactor, Dr Stanley Quek and Founder and President of the Chippendale Creative Precinct, Nicky Ginsberg.
Nicky Ginsberg said this year’s prize received a wealth of submissions and interest from the talent of Sydney and afield. She explained; “The quality of this year’s submissions was exceptional with entries from many established and award-winning Australian artists. This year’s prize received over 140 entries, almost double the amount received last year.”
The winner will walk away with a $10,000, three month art residency in Andalucía, southern Spain, hosted by Joya: arte + ecologiá. Entries were judged by two-time Archibald prize-winner Del Kathryn Barton as well as the Dean and Director of COFA, Ross Harley. This year there will also be a people’s choice award and voters will be in the running to win some great prizes.
The work of the selected finalists will be on display across three gallery locations including NG Art Gallery, L1 Central Pop Up Gallery and Carlton Street, Park Lane Pop-Up Gallery. All are invited to see and enjoy.
