What’s in store for Melbourne Art Fair 2014?

Melbourne Art Fair is Australia’s longest running and leading art fair presented by the Melbourne Art Foundation (MAF). Yesterday was the announcement of the selected galleries confirmed to participate – 70 in total.

Presented from 13 to 17 August in the historic Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne’s Carlton Gardens, the Melbourne Art Fair will showcase over 300 artists from around the world presented by some of the best Australian, New Zealand and other international galleries.

Galleries will be presented in two sections, with established galleries in the main MAF Galleries section and emerging galleries and artist collectives in the MAF Platform section. MAF Platform continues the Fair’s commitment to exhibiting the best emerging talent by presenting curated galleries and ARI’s younger than five years.

MAF Project Rooms are again being dedicated to the best Australian institutions, with five of them within the fair grounds and one off-site. Whilst MAF Edge will, for the first time, present a curated performance and interactive group of established performance artists.

The co-curators of the inaugural MAF Video – a new section dedicated to new media and moving image – were announced as Simone Hine and Kyle Weise (co-founding directors of Screen Space.

Another highlight of the Fair is the MAF Commission, due to be announced in July. This commission involves a large-scale and highly ambitious installation piece by a prominent Australasian artist. Previous artists commissions included Ian Burns (2012), Jon Campbell (2010), Peter Hennessey (2008), David Griggs (2008) and Michael Parekowhai (2006).

The Melbourne Art Fair is supported by Melbourne Art Week running from 11 to 17 August – a seven-day citywide program of lectures, forums, free children’s workshops and events.

Tickets for MAF on sale from 30th May, 2014.
