This year’s $3,000 Robin Lawrence Open Art Prize went to Sydney-based photographer and photo-embroidery artist Christine Sweeney, whose practice bridges photography and textile arts.

Christine Sweeney, AUSSIE AUSSIE, 2026, mixed media on canvas, incorporating photography and textiles, 27 × 19cm / Winner of the Robin Lawrence Open Art Prize in the 2026 Glebe Art Show / Courtesy the artist and Glebe Art Show
In this winning work, AUSSIE AUSSIE, 2026, which draws on Adelaide artist Peter Drew’s ‘AUSSIE’ posters, Khazoom Coory and Bella Singh – their images drawn from the National Archive of Australia – sit side by side on a brick wall. Where the posters themselves are vulnerable to the elements or vandals, the considered and permanent hand embroidery offers a quiet and considered permanence.
