We Bury Our Own by Christian Thompson opened this week at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi, Fitzroy. The exhibition presents an intense and engaging series of photographic self portraits that are embedded with complex associations surrounding Australian indigenous identity and relationships between indigenous and Western histories. By drawing on a wide range of influences, and incorporating sculpture and textiles as symbols into the photographs, Thompson transforms stereotypes of indigenous cultures into unexpected and compelling contemporary forms.
