Christopher Charles: Banjawarn

Christopher Charles investigates Aum Shinrikyo, the Japanese doomsday cult that took up residence at Banjawarn, a pastoral station 800km north-east of Perth in Western Australia during the 1990s, where it is believed the 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack was devised.

The exhibition explores the psychology behind Aum Shinrikyo and their practices, which include: appropriating elements of science fiction; the syncretistic blending of religious faiths; chemical, biological and electrical experiments; and mind control its many forms – behavioural, chemical, and technological. ‘Banjawarn’ paints an eerie yet fascinating account of the mystery surrounding the bizarre sect, brought into focus by the artist’s display of found propaganda; animated cartoons, recruitment videos, songs and comics, as well as artefacts and samples from the outback site.
