Christopher Hodges: Balance

Many of Christopher Hodges’ latest works threaten to fall. They tilt precariously into space. And yet, their steel forms are perfectly poised over bases that are not simply a support, but crucial to the work as a whole. As the artist explains, “to create balance within a sculpture you need to have every element sitting in harmony… I’m seeking a refinement of form so that it can speak freely and truly.”

Carefully calculated geometric relationships have a part to play in the resolution of Hodges’ forms. We are drawn in by their evocative presence – just bigger than life-size in scale, they have a figurative quality, like silhouettes, or shadows made solid. These works will sit beside stainless steel sculptures with shimmering surfaces and towering wooden forms. The interaction between these works is all part of the theatre.
