The works produced by Daniela Miszkinis – lone figures, naked or partially clothed, inhabiting non-descriptive spaces – have an arresting impact, a directness that speaks of human introspection. She always paints directly from life, without photos, projectors, preliminary sketches or planning. The work happens in the immediate moment, spontaneously, as she is captured by a brief conversation, a simple gesture or a momentary look.
Having emigrated from Poland, the sense of being an outsider is evident in Miszkinis’ work, particularly in her naked portraits. She avoids using professional life models, drawing her subjects from all walks of life – some are friends, others strangers; creative people, painters, musicians, fashion designers or street artists. For Miszkinis, it is not only their life story that intrigues her, but a depth and a sensitivity that allows their inner qualities to rise to the surface.
