Deb Mansfield: The Armchair Traveller

Photomedia artist and researcher, Deb Mansfield, has focused much of her career’s work on littoral geographies: the place where land meets sea. As such, an important part of her research has been travelling to specific littoral regions around the world including Louisiana, Tasmania, Newfoundland and South Africa. This new work, developed over a residency in Tasmania and another in Newfoundland, explores the idea of the ‘armchair traveller’ yet longs for remote coastlines.

Combining the domestic with the littoral by upholstering photographic-tapestries onto 19th century replica chaise-lounges, Mansfield creates a mural photograph that transports the sitter to a foreign place and time.
