Deborah Williams’ etchings depict the world of the dog, not in the context of its reception by humans, but rather its existence on its own terms. The artist’s canine portraits de-centre the animals on the image surface, presenting them as entities independent of human intervention. Her recent works extend this idea, by introducing mark making made by the animal subjects themselves. Williams emphasises the properties of the medium of etching in her work, allowing the plates to be exposed and weathered, adding to the removal of her subjects from mankind’s interfering gaze.
