Dirty Playground is the brainchild of Mike Barker and Jess Ho, which supports emerging, subversive art cultures and resurrects under-utilised spaces through the transformation or renovation of the space. Dirty Playground’s mission is to enable forgotten infrastructures to flourish by marrying emerging artists with the reinvigorated space.
DuNord has partnered with Dirty Playground on their next project by offering their 110sqm basement space as a temporary artist studio from July 1, 2013. Dirty Playground will be shelling the basement of five businesses worth of junk for the first two months of residency while reviewing applications for artists in the space.
Artists will be working towards the theme of ‘Six Months of Darkness’ not only an expression of the Nordic months of darkness in partnership with DuNord, but also a literal interpretation of the residency in a basement. The theme is open for the artists’ interpretation with three successful applicants to be chosen by DuNord and Dirty Playground.
Successful artists will be announced on the Dirty Playground website and contacted directly in time to start their project from the beginning of September.
The artists will reveal their stages of work to the public over three Open Days throughout the residency, finally concluding their Six Months of Darkness with an exhibition launch party in the Australian Summer in December.
The works will be on display from 5 to 8 December when Dirty Playground will bump out the works and repurpose another space.
