Egg & Dart present Christopher Zanko
Sydney Contemporary 2023, Booth A10
Carriageworks
7 to 10 September
Illawarra artist Christopher Zanko directs his gaze to the original in our communities through his graphic style artworks, depicting a moment in the Australian architectural vernacular. He captures and records the settings and dwellings of mid-twentieth-century suburban homes, those with humble, noble bones and greater possibilities. Zanko locates his subjects – celebrating them through the duality of printmaking and painting – their settings and world through wood-carved expression suffused with the play of colour and shade, reminding the viewer of the past.
At Egg & Dart’s Sydney Contemporary 2023 presentation, Zanko will be presenting new large-scale monochromatic works, a new direction for the artist, who says that monochromatic palette allows and pushes him to spend more time translating textures through the carving process, which are often difficult to gauge their tactile nature without viewing in the flesh.
Zanko graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts from Wollongong University, New South Wales, in 2015. He was a finalist in the 2015 Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award, the 2019 Wynne Prize, the 2020 Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, and the 2022 Sulman Prize, as well as the winner of the 2016 Gosford Art Prize and Gongcrete Art Prize.
In 2020, Zanko was part of a commissioning exhibition organised by Hazelhurst Arts Centre, The Home, that celebrated art deco residential design in Australia, and was recently awarded the 70th-anniversary commission to paint Rose Seidler House for the Museums of History New South Wales Collection. Zanko’s work can be found in the Wollongong Art Gallery and University of Wollongong collections.
