EVERYWHEN Artspace present Janice Stanley

Sydney Contemporary 2023, Booth A11
Carriageworks
7 to 10 September

At thirty-six, Pitjantjatjara artist Janice Stanley is the youngest of four women artists featured by Everywhen Artspace in NextGen Ernabella for Sydney Contemporary. Granddaughter of the late Tjariya Stanley, one of Ernabella Arts’ most well-known founding artists and cultural leaders, Stanley’s aunts include the award-winning senior ceramicist and community leader, Alison Milyika Carroll and Renita Stanley.

Stanley started painting and making ceramics in 2013; her work soon attracting attention in exhibitions in leading galleries throughout Australia and internationally. Especially distinctive are her paintings of the large Salt Lake (Pantu) at Mount Connor, an important site for the Seven Sisters creation story, which she depicts from an aerial perspective.

The Pantu tells of Seven Sisters running across the country, creating landforms in their wake. In washes of brilliant colour and meandering line, she captures the changes in light and colour; the reflections of the sky and the movement of the water as it spreads and flows, transforming the lands as it passes. “In this part of the story, the Sisters are travelling south through the country,” she says. “The normally dry lake comes alive after rain.”
