Ernst Fries: Retrospective and current sculpture

This survey exhibition is the first time Australian audiences are able to view Fries’ sculptural oeuvre in its entirety.  Spanning six decades from the 1960s to the present, the exhibition highlights the recurring themes of urbanization, and the associated environmental issues that impact nature – ideas that resonate at a local as well as universal level.

Fries’ practice can be understood as a synthesis of experiences, as seen through the eyes of an immigrant, one whose inquisitive spirit is united with great skill in both metalwork and engineering. He combines these elements with a very personal response to his environment, the most compelling of contemporary issues.
