US photographer Sam Contis is known for works exploring the construction of place and self. Here, in an Australian first, three main bodies of work are presented – Cross Country, Deep Springs, and Overpass – giving insight into Contis’ practice over twelve years and eighty-five works.
Shifting between large- and intimately-scaled views, black and white and colour, Contis builds new terrain out of multiple fragments and perspectives – showing us different ways of experiencing and seeing the body and its environment, and the complicated relationship photography holds with human attachments to place.
