Cyclone Tracy

Taking an unexpected turn on Christmas Eve, 1974, Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin, destroyed the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and led to the largest evacuation and relief effort in Australian history.

Re-opened to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary, the refreshed exhibition includes a replica of the red Torana Darwin resident John Garner painted with the message “Tracey You Bitch” (that Garner helped repaint) and objects like the Raggedy Andy doll from the crying child image on The Australian Women’s Weekly’s January 1975 cover (donated in 2022).
