Gary Heery embraced the collaborative nature of portraiture alongside his subjects – who represent the pith of Australian contemporary culture across various fields – to take control of their own photographs; ‘to express themselves through me,’ says Heery. With the subject as auteur, each shot is further edited by each individual from hand-drawn graffiti-like sketches tagging their signature style or occupation to cut-out, or superimposed representations of the love of water, childhood heroes and revelations of the inner self – ‘that’s me’, reveals sitter del kathryn barton.
