John Firth-Smith’s love of the Hill End surrounds blossomed in the 1960s on a student jaunt into the bush setting of Wattle Flat in an area known as Wyagdon. In his first exhibition in five years, the admired senior artist’s compositions have fungi-orange hues – a nod to the weathered tools and found archeological material from around his property. He explained the works “combine memories and recent responses… opposite parallels with life on the ocean that I miss when I am in Sydney, and Hill End surrounds where I now live and work – a full circle.”
