Into Light: French masterworks from the Musée de la Chartreuse

‘Into Light’ showcases works from the Musée de la Chartreuse in Douai, France. Classical and Post-Impressionist paintings from the museum’s collection reveal changes in French art during the 19th century, and how the developments were felt as far away as Australia, having a marked influence on Australian artists who began to explore en plein air painting. Curator Julie McLaren notes ‘France was the acknowledged centre of the art world, as realist styles of painting were challenged by Impressionism.’
