Cuming’s latest body of work expresses outback observances through water as found in remote and dramatic parts of our country’s amazing outback. Wet seasons overload the land and water cascades down incredible waterfalls to rejoin the sea. To Cuming, they are symbolic of nature recycling to somehow keep this planet operating – a symbol of renewal and life.
Cuming’s work has long been inspired by landscape and the outback is an irresistible magnet which has had a profound effect on her practice. The visual nature of the outback is in itself innately abstract and presents special challenges. “Experiencing great places in nature is an enormous battery charge and escape hatch from city life,” says Cuming.
