Luminous World: Contemporary Art from the Wesfarmers Collection

Curated by Helen Carroll Fairhall and developed in association with the Art Gallery of WA, ‘Luminous World’ brings Wesfarmers’ contemporary art collection to regional and national audiences for the first time. The exhibition features 67 significant contemporary paintings, objects and photographs by 55 leading Australian and New Zealand artists who explore the phenomenon of light.

As such an expansive area of exploration, the idea of light offers endless possibilities for inventiveness and investigation: into its properties as optical experience, its symbolic importance, physical manifestations, and the links to life cycles concerned with earth, stars and space, as well as mythical and spiritual resonances and beliefs that light is heavily engaged with. Through many different aesthetic and philosophical directions, the artists in this exhibition explore the role that both the presence and absence of light has had in defining and transforming our world.
