The work of Mandy Gunn has an environmental theme, referencing our wasteful society, its consumption of resources and our continual quest for acquisitions. These works comment on the marks we leave behind on our natural landscape and the traditional ways of managing the land as practised by Indigenous people.
Gunn collects, cuts and reconstitutes everyday found and recycled materials through collage and textile linked techniques, such as weaving, twining and finger knitting and pattern repetition. With works comprised of materials that have over the years become obsolete through digitisation, such as printed phone books, paper wrappings, shopping bags, catalogues and old Metcards, Gunn’s works take on an archival quality by recording what ‘once was’.
