As 2023 Wai Tang Commissioning Award recipients, The Huxleys’ new body of work captures the artist duo’s experiences of growing up in Australia, where sporting achievement is valued above all else. The series reflects the struggle of creative, shy queer kids searching for kindred spirits.
For The Huxleys, music, art, fashion and the dark underworld offered artistic salvation; athleticism and competitive fervour threatened to swallow the painfully slow struggle through adolescence. The sun as nemesis, gym class as tormentor: each brush with team sports delivered another realm of hell.
