Michael Johnson: The 1970s

In the mid 1960s Michael Johnson pioneered the way for a calculated geometric composition, characterised by a refined use of vibrant acrylic colour on a scale not commonly seen in Australian art.

From the fusion between architectonics and painting to distinctive flat planes, this exhibition showcases the last three paintings which remained with the artist from the period 1969 to 1975 including the rarely exhibited Insult (1968), accompanied by drawings and studies that provide a unique insight into Johnson’s thought process.
