Paddy Bedford

Paddy Bedford (c.1922–2007) began painting on canvas in 1998, at the age of seventy-six, when a trip to Melbourne with fellow Gija artists Hector Jandany and Rusty Peters led the three to create a series of twenty-three drawings and paintings known as the Jirrawun Suite. Bedford had an immediate and powerful command of the medium and often painted daily. His final works were a shaky series of white gouache on black crescent board.

The suite of eight works to be exhibited at Sydney Contemporary have only recently been rediscovered, having been held in Trust since the artist’s passing in 2007. While his painterly gestures were always assured and made with conviction, this final series captures a sense of fragility and vulnerability of the last years of Paddy Bedford’s life in paint.
