In 2012, American photographers Amy Stein and Stacy Arezou Mehrfar embarked on a month-long road trip throughout New South Wales – Australia’s most populous state. They were interested in investigating the distinct Australian phenomenon of ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome,’ a pejorative referring to the tendency of Australians to pull down those they believe reach too far.
The resulting photographs in Tall Poppy Syndrome present their findings, featuring all manner of subjects, from school children to municipal workers, surfers, animals and sports teams.
