The Art of Protest

Artists past and present respond to environmental and socio-cultural crises and call for change, from early modernists and social realists tackling worker’s rights in the 1940s to the poster art of the 1970s; to women’s rights, environmental policy, and preservation of local heritage; to the COVID-19 pandemic, apocalyptic bushfires, and the urgent need for climate action. Artists include Noel Counihan, Peter Drew, Maddison Gibbs, Simryn Gill, Piers Greville, Deborah Kelly, Fiona Lee, Joseph McGlennon, Ann Newmarch, Alex Seton, Tina Havelock Stevens and Anne Zahalka.
