Tom Moore creates fantastical hybrid characters, each hand-blown in glass, which he places in enchanting mixed-media landscapes. He offers up an alternative world where the mundane becomes extraordinary and less is, in fact, less.
‘Life Preserver’ is inspired by historical cabinets of curiosity, which were the precursor to museums. Reflecting the wonder and excitement of an age of scientific exploration, biological oddities (sometimes faked) were highly prized. Moore’s glass bell jars offer a surprising and satisfying new twist on this idea. Moore’s conglomerate creatures are placed inside elaborate bell jars of his own creation, imbuing them with an aura of science and believability. These works address themes of environment and contemporary culture in a fresh and original way.
