Sydney-based artist Tom Polo is drawn to the psychology of mirroring – borrowing fragments of social encounters and time spent with others in the studio that he translates into his works.
Working across painting and installation; how conversation, exchange and gesture become embodied acts of portraiture is explored, Polo moving between abstraction and figuration, his paintings blurring boundaries between self and other – to often reveal complexities of identity. Intimacy and theatricality of shared human experience are captured, as he presents his paintings: both mirror and portal.
