From one centre of power to another, (Versailles, now Canberra) ‘Treasures from the Palace’, on show at the National Gallery of Australia from December 9, 2016 includes a formidable collection upwards of 130 works of art and design from portraits, statues, tapestries, ornamental fans, clocks, and a desk from the reign of Louis XIV to Marie Antoinette. France’s period of excess spurred innovation and here the legacy of artists and craftspeople lives on in the warp and weft of consumption and creation.
