Artspace, in partnership with Perimeter Books (Melbourne) and Printed Matter Inc. (New York), is pleased to announce ‘VOLUME 2015 | Another Art Book Fair’.

‘VOLUME 2015’ will engage and profile the breadth of the artist’s book genre, with a focus on independently produced, artist-led publications and related materials that are responsive, discursive, irreverent, and that function as a creatively and politically engaged mode of communication. ‘VOLUME 2015’ will see Artspace activated as an evolving space for creative production and distribution, hosting a network of gutsy yet intelligent publishing initiatives spanning local and global contexts.

Partnering with Sydney Contemporary, ‘VOLUME 2015′ will inhabit every floor of the Gunnery building, transforming the Artspace galleries and studios into a vital creative space that embraces the spirit of independent artist’s book production. The weekend’s events will feature exhibitors from across the spectrum of contemporary art book production: from zines to antiquarian books, limited editions to photobooks and everything in between. The weekend-long book fair will feature live music; launches; signings; readings; workshops led by artists, producers and publishers; and a series of ancillary performances.

Artspace Executive Director, Alexie Glass-Kantor says, “Visitors to the book fair will have immediate access to independently published artists’ books in all formats, everything from 50 cents to $500. ‘VOLUME 2015’ promises to be Australia’s most exciting and accessible book fair. We want audiences to join us and experience the dynamism and diversity of the artist’s book genre.”

She continues, “Artspace’s partnership with Perimeter Books, Australia’s go-to store, publisher and distributor of innovative and beautifully presented small press artist’s books, and Printed Matter Inc., the most recognised authority on independently produced contemporary artist’s books internationally, establishes ‘VOLUME’ as the most significant fair in the Australasian region for supporting independent artist’s book production.”

Dan Rule and Justine Ellis, co-directors of Perimeter Books, add, “We’re genuinely excited to be co-presenting a major art book fair alongside Artspace and Printed Matter, two independent organisations that have a fundamental interest in the history and the contemporary production of the artist book. Not unlike key art book fairs in Europe and America, the importance of ‘VOLUME 2015’ is in the fact that it is built from the ground up: it rises from the independent art publishing community itself and aspires to reflect that wider community’s different facets, approaches, incarnations and concerns.”

Of the fair, Printed Matter’s Jordan Nassar and Shannon Michael Cane say, “We’re thrilled to have a hand in bringing another art book fair to Australia, working with our friends at Artspace and Perimeter. As the producers of the NY and LA Art Book Fairs, Printed Matter is looking forward to this first installment of ‘VOLUME’, as a starting point for a biennial Art Book Fair in Australia for years to come. With Printed Matter’s fundamental mission being the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of artist’s books, expanding our activities far outside our home-base in New York City, around the world, is of course an exciting reality for our almost-40-year-old institution – a reality that our founders could only have dreamed of.”
