Simryn Gill
MSK with MER. Paper Kunsthalle
Coinciding with the exhibition ‘The (Hemi)Cycle of Leaves and Paper’ at Belgium’s Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, this French-folded publication features subdued black-and-white photographs by Australia-Malaysian multimedia artist Simryn Gill. These images capture the remaining signs of life in a building left for ruin and now overrun by leaves, paper, earth, animals, their cocoons and cobwebs. Textual interventions by the artist guide the reader through the unsettling atmosphere nonetheless offering a glimpse of hope for new life with, “The thick yellow light of an evening, like yolk, slanting in from the window.”
