Ten statements about democracy are applied in concept and form in artist Matthew Ngui’s analytical and immersive installation about ‘perspective’.
It is one of five works the Singapore Art Museum commissioned to celebrate and reflect on 50 years of the nation’s independence. Ngui printed fragments of text across 300 PVC pipes creating an environment in which comprehension runs parallel to your position in the space; seeing and understanding are separate experiences here.
A clever spatial arrangement, the audio of politicians echoing in the pipes and the chance for the audience to add their own voice demonstrates how collective participation shapes the whole.
