Arthur Boyd: The Life of Saint Francis

Alongside drawings, pastels, and lithographs, twelve of Arthur Boyd’s rarely seen, larger-than-life tapestries (with a density of 2,500 stitches per square metre) narrate the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The exhibition marks the first time that these tapestries, drawn from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection, have been displayed together.

Starting in 1964, Boyd captured the psyche of the religious figure from the heart of human drama in a distinctive palette of reds, oranges, and yellows – the results welding emotions of love and pain, sacrifice and compassion.
