Melbourne-based artist Ross Coulter presents a two-volume publication documenting his four-year project titled ‘Audience’ recently shown at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. These photo-books, bound in grey fabric hold a comprehensive series of black and white photographs taken by Coulter between 2013 and 2016. Through the lens, the artist captured the experience of invited audiences, asked to pose under the pretence of watching an imagined performance work. Each individual is photographed seemingly engaged in the real-life experience of an exhibition. A list of participant’s names, as well as the artist-run spaces, commercial galleries and the institutions that took part accompany these editions.
