The camaraderie of this lockdown weary group of artists is apparent in the Banyule Open Studios weekend from the 14 to 15 October, celebrating art and creativity in Melbourne’s north east. The artists have invited the community to “step into an artist’s world” by visiting their working studios; talk with the artists, experience demonstrations and workshops, and purchase artwork directly from its maker.
Art forms on display include drawing, painting, printmaking, installation, performance, video, photography, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery, mosaics, textile, and fibre art.
The Banyule Open Studios program is different to other studio programs. There are live events, including an opening at the Textile Art Community Art Space in Heidelberg West on the evening of Friday 13 October, complete with an all women’s Mariachi Band, Queen of Hearts. On Saturday 15 October, there will be an experimental film, dance and musical performance at Dimension Art Project Space in Bundoora. Never has a warehouse been so transformed by light and sound!
The artists’ are joined by the Barrbunin Beek Aboriginal Gathering Place Artists and Makers, who open their gathering place on Sunday 15 October, from 10am to 4pm. Local artists without a studio space have come together to exhibit their art at The Bellfield Community Hub pop-up studio. The adjacent Bellfield Community Gardeners are opening their garden to enjoy during the Banyule Open Studios weekend. This artist-run initiative is a veracious community celebration of arts and culture.
