In this exhibition, clay forms transcend their functional potential. What makes a form beautiful, powerful or good? For the ancient Greeks it was proportion, harmony and order. For the Japanese it is wabi-sabi – a balance between simplicity and complexity, restraint and spontaneity, perfection and imperfection, permanence and impermanence.
Marea Gazzard’s iconic clay sculptures retain the sense of a vessel whilst Peter Rushforth’s functional vessels invite aesthetic contemplation. The artists in this exhibition transform clay – that ancient medium – into objects that are timeless.
The artists included in this exhibition are Marea Gazzard, Eloise Rankine, Peter Rushforth, Brett Stone and Kati Watson.
