Corroboree Sydney 2014, the city’s largest Indigenous festival, will showcase the best in contemporary and traditional Indigenous arts and culture.

The lighting of the Corroboree Sydney Firelight on the forecourt of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) on Friday November 21 will open the eleven-day festival. Visitors will have the opportunity to see over 100 Indigenous artists, writers, dancers and musicians perform around Sydney’s iconic foreshore, showcasing their talents at predominantly free events.

Amongst the program highlights is the Gurung Parade of more than 3,000 children through Sydney CBD, Black Arts Markets, the return of Homeground – a free two-day outdoor event at the Opera House featuring Dan Sultan, Digging Roots, Richard Frankland and The Charcoal Club and many more.

The festival also introduces ‘The Rocks Boatshed’, a purpose built venue on the Western Promenade Lawn (in front of the MCA) providing a place to celebrate Aboriginal life in Sydney during the festival. Here visitors will be able to enjoy a free retrospective of films from the Sundance Film Festival’s Indigenous program as well as music, theatre, live broadcasts by Koori Radio, storytelling, forums and kid’s workshops.

Australia’s leading Indigenous arts company Bangarra Dance presents Bangarra celebrates 25 years!, a free outdoor gathering on the forecourt of the Opera House on Sunday November 30. This special event will feature a traditional Yolngu performance from North East Arnhem Land, a guest appearance from Christine Anu and will culminate in a special dance experience by Bangarra dancers. This event also marks the closing of the festival.

Corroboree Sydney takes its name from the local Indigenous word ‘carriberie’ – meaning a ceremony of singing, dancing and storytelling and this is exactly what the festival will bring.
