Darren McDonald’s latest exhibition, ‘Faces’ focuses on portraiture. McDonald’s imagery is often sourced from photography but this took a turn when he decided to paint the artist Stephen Benwell for the Doug Moran Prize in 2013. He enjoyed the experience so much that he decided to continue using a sitter in his Port Melbourne studio.
Since this epiphany, he has asked colleagues and friends to sit for him; Drasko Boljevic, James Smeaton, Lewis Millar, and Brett Harris and Andrew Browne, which was entered in this year Archibald Prize. McDonald was also a finalist in this year’s Benalla Nude Art Prize and was highly commended for his painting of the artist Robin Astley, entitled Painter, Model with Chair.
