International artist Damien March returns to Melbourne after four years to exhibit ’emanation’, a collection of new work at No Vacancy Gallery. Since his last Melbourne show, March has been prolific, having six shows at Sydney, Hollywood and Beverly Hills. His work is highly regarded and features in prominent collections and homes around the world.
Like all artists, March has endured a difficult past year cancelling Los Angeles shows due to bans on international travel. During this time, he found solitude in the creative release of his studio. Diametrically opposed to the desolate city at the time, March found escapism through depicting Melbourne during more prosperous times.
Busy, energetic canvases dominate ’emanation’, with a unique expressive gestures and effortless depictions that generate a distinctive visual experience. March uses a range of materials to create diverse surface textures; favouring the harsh sand contrasting with glistening resin. His landscapes will often place the viewer within the work, using visual devices such as perspective and scale to heighten the visual experience.
’emanation’ is a poignant reminder of how the city has recovered from the melancholy of 2020.
