The Bayside Painting Prize is the only annual prize for painting in Victoria, making it an important platform for contemporary painters across Australia. For this prize, “painting” is defined as a work made with a liquid medium applied to a rigid or semi-rigid support. Unconstrained by fixed definitions or themes, this year’s finalist exhibition showcases the work of forty-six artists, both established and lesser-known, whose varied approaches to the painted medium – different surfaces, subject matters, techniques – convey the breadth and diversity of the practice in Australia today.
