Tom Phillips: Beyond The Silent Struggles

“As an artist, I believe art should say something about the world that we live in. Therefore, my role is not to provide answers but to question the society that we live in,” states Tom Phillips. “My paintings have always been about the human experience and its struggles.”

Searching for a relationship between abstraction and figuration, Phillips wrestles with the two styles on his canvas. Unaware of what the picture will be, his artmaking process creates “a tension and some kind of aggressive energy within my paintings.”
