This survey marks one hundred years since the artist’s birth. George Johnson’s (1926–2021) career, in the words of Caroline Barnes, “spanned across the rise of modern art, its dissolution into postmodernism and then the diffusion of visual art into pluralistic, post-medium contemporaneity” – the artist maintaining “unwavering commitment to abstraction as a reflective practice” throughout these shifts.
In 2016, a Johnson exhibition was titled 90 70 30 – ninety years on earth; seventy years in the studio; thirty years with this gallery.
