Opening this Friday August 8, the 8th Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair has prepared an exciting program of artistic demonstrations, interactive workshops and displays. Showcasing the contemporary fine art of over forty Indigenous art centres from across Australia including Babbarra Designs, Mangkaja Arts, Mimi Arts and Crafts and Injalak Arts and Crafts, the three-day event is held in Darwin, on Larrakia Lands, at the Darwin Convention Centre.
The Fair coincides with the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards, the Darwin Festival and the National Indigenous Music Awards; a time when the city of Darwin becomes the focal point of the nation for visitors with an interest in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts.
The Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair showcases the work of emerging and established artists, and provides a space for visitors to meet the artists, and learn from the variety of different cultural groups across Australia. There is also the unique opportunity to purchase works from over forty Aboriginal owned community art centres. Experience the rich diversity of these beautiful, unique works that have been inspired by the country’s most remote desert and coastal regions, to rural and urban communities. There is a range of styles, mediums and products available including: paintings on canvas, bark paintings, works on paper including limited edition prints, sculpture, didgeridoos, fibre art and cultural regalia. The diversity of Indigenous art at the Fair is remarkable!
A program of guided tours, demonstrations, workshops and forums ensures a memorable experience for all.
Get hands on at the Fair by immersing yourself in workshops and demonstrations, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn weaving, lino printing, painting on ochre and much more. The workshops will be presented by the Art Centres and will be held daily at 10am and 2pm.
